History:

When the expected route of the Canadian Pacific Railway shifted dramatically in the spring of 1881, the course of growth in Swift Current shifted alongside it, becoming one of 800 communities that grew up along the mainline. Its location was chosen because of the soon-to-be Town’s namesake, the creek that Indigenous inhabitants identified as a “swift current.” The railway arrived in Swift Current in 1883, and a 400-foot stone and plan dam was erected 1888 to supply a steady source of water for its steam locomotives. Located a kilometre southeast of the station, in what today is Riverside Park. Visitors to the dam, which is still in existence today, can see a plaque outlining the history of the railroad and Swift Current’s role in its growth.

The railway has forever divided the City of Swift Current into two distinct parts, the north side where the majority of development occurred and the south side, once its own township. Citing the town management of Swift Current’s as “extravagant and inefficient” the residents on the south side of the railroad tracks initially voted against becoming a part of Swift Current in 1912, before agreeing to amalgamate to help the town reach the population threshold needed to become a city, which it did in 1914.
