About Highland

Recreation:

Highland Park:

The Park itself is located centrally within the community and is home to Perry Field, a regulation-sized soccer pitch; a full-sized football field, two mini-soccer pitches, an outdoor rink, an asphalt base outdoor rink, and a basketball court. The park is also home to a large play structure and splash pad, with washroom facilities on the premises.

Bike/Hiking Trail:

Thanks to a legacy of the recently hosted Western Canada Summer Games, the Highlands subdivision is also home to a new bike and hiking trail located directly to the south of the division which was designed by expert mountain bike trail designer Matt Hadley.

·      Wheatland Mall: A 4-6 min drive away, the Wheatland Mall is home to a Pioneer Co-op grocery, home store, liquor store, and gas mart, as well as a Sasktel outlet, Giant Tiger, Peavey Mart, and Coles Bookstore.

·      Swift Current Mall: a 7 min drive down Battleford Trail, the main thorough-fare that borders the division, this mall and the developments surrounding it offer access to a Safeway and Wholesale Club for groceries. The Living Sky Casino and Sky Centre events venue, Staples, Wal-Mart, Canadian Tire, as well as a number of gas stations, restaurants and fast-food outlets including a Starbucks.

·      Swift Current’s Historic Downtown: a 5 min drive from the centre of the subdivision, Swift Current’s historic downtown region offers a host of independently owned businesses, including health food stores, flower store, toy store, wedding store, fashion store, furniture stores, banks, restaurants, specialty coffee, and a Pharmasave outlet that is western Canada’s largest. The downtown is also host to the Lyric Theatre, a historic music and theatre venue, as well as Market Square a farmer’s market that happens every Saturday in the summer-season.

Walk Score: 15

While the lack of retail establishments, schools or hospitals located directly in the neighbourhood means that nearly all errands will require a car, its large centralized park and developed sidewalk system makes it the perfect neighbourhood for dog and family walks to the park.

History:

The Highland subdivision of Swift Current is located along the historic Battleford Trail, a provincial heritage site which consists of 190 mile long transportation and communications link between the settlements of Swift Current and the Battlefords located in north-central Saskatchewan. Just a short-drive away lies the Municipal Heritage Property known as the Battleford Trail Wheel Rut Area, which showcases two deep, parallel ruts made from Red River Cart and wagon wheels that showcases the heavy traffic in trade and supplies that existed between the two communities.
