 History:

The Sask Valley subdivision of Swift Current is located in an area rich in history for Canada’s First Nation’s people, including a petroglyph located on a rib of land directly owned by Esther and Dave Green, owners of Green Hectares Bed and Breakfast which borders the subdivision. Discovered in 1973 the carvings of buffalo tracks, a turtle and other geometric shapes were verified in 1988 when a study conducted by Tim Jones of Saskatoon showed an affinity with the petroglyphs of St. Victor, which lie south of Assiniboia, over 200 kms away. Further studies were conducted by the University of Manitoba’s Archaeology Department, which revealed pictographs just a metre below the surface dated at nearly 1200 years old.  The petroglyph was officially recognized as a sacred aboriginal spot and a Provincial Heritage Property on August 27, 1990.
