History:

The current Credit Union I-plex was formerly known as the Civic Centre, which was built at a cost of $650,000 in honour of the City’s Centennial celebrations. In 1975 during a freak summer storm hurricane-force winds, clocking in at over 100 miles an hour whipped through the city, with an additional 18 inches of rain falling, destroying the Civic Centre and the home of the Swift Current Broncos. The damage started at the southwest corner of the building and tore open a hole which further ripped open the upper west wall, before peeling back the roof and sending sheet metal across and down to the north parking lot, which further led to the blowing out of the east wall. While no one was injured in the storm, the resulting damage rendered the building unusable and temporarily saw the Swift Current Broncos relocated to Lethbridge for the season, much to the dismay of Swift Current residents who worried that the move could be a permanent one. The Broncos returned to the Civic Centre in 1976, and the city of Lethbridge missing their adopted team, created their own, aptly named the “Hurricanes.”

Tragedy struck the Swift Current Broncos once more in 1986 when the lives of four team members were lost in a bus crash just outside the city. Today their legacy continues to be memorialized at the rebuilt and upgraded I-plex where photos and bios of the players can be viewed. Their numbers were also retired and their jersey’s hang from the I-plex rafters, while a constant reminder in the shape of a four-leaf clover patch is worn on the jerseys of the Broncos, the Legionnaires and Swift Current’s AAA team.
